Gwen, I'm so glad your babies are safe at home!  What a scare!  My first
basset, Casey, did that to me once:  dug himself the nicest hole along the
back fence in his yard, found an extremely ripe old bone and settled down to
have a nice chew, completely ignoring his hysterical mom searching high and
low for him, running through the neighbors' yards and driving up and down
the block.  When he finally raised up his little dome head and said "huh?",
I would have strangled him if I hadn't been so overcome with relief and joy!
I can laugh about it now, but at the time, not so funny, right?
