I do not weigh in often, I force myself to take a back seat far more often than I should I fear; given the fact that we handle over 20,000 medical cases a year.
There are many varied opinions, references, clinical trial studies - the list is very long - and everyone has an opinion.
Sadly most that have an opinion have a "minimalist" viewpoint. Meaning the case studies are limited.

As it has come up, and I am incredibly well versed in this subject - I want to weigh in on Gabapentin.

Originally released as Neurontin, it was pulled off the shelves due to many side effects in humans. Original release was in the 1970's,
Rebranded in the 1990's and dropping the branded name - we now see vets giving Gabapentin to canines for many neurological issues.
Have you researched it? Has it been approved for use on canines? Did I just hit your nerve center?

Personally for our cases, I never care what the modality is - I only care if the modality actually WORKS.
I have used it in hundreds of cases by veterinarian recommendation. And pulled those cases off very quickly for other prescriptions that did not cause failure to eat, dizziness or tremors. a 100% response in our evaluations on hundreds of cases.
Elevated kidney levels also occurred. Part of the problem is that this is being diagnosed in critical cases, so you might see a limited response, which ends with the tag line..... and a month later.....
Gabapentin caused far more adverse reactions such as nausea, loose stools and gastroenteritis than it resolves.
So many better options out there give your canines overall case profile.

Please do your research before just relying on a vet prescription based on a pharmaceutical representatives recommendation.
Our veterinarians are NOT pharmacists, and rely on pharmacy reps for their purchases. Sad but true.
Very upsetting to one that deals with the fall out from failure drugs on a daily basis.

Yea. Strong statement and I normally do not do these.
It just makes me more than angry that canines suffer because people do not understand how drugs, or how some veterinary references work.
Please take into account when referencing, long range health issues.
Commonly these are not addressed in drug recommendations.

I do not have the time frame to weigh in often, and know this will be taken very harshly.
For those that want to have a constructive conversation, please call the direct line 661 269 2781.
I do not have the luxury of unlimited email, text or IM's on this topic but will gladly talk about our case profiles.
