The diet would be effective and very healthy if you used a variety of vegetables and made them from fresh or frozen. The canned are full of salt.  The idea is to decease the calorie density per cup of food by replacing some of the high calorie stuff. They get the same volume of food with less calories. The dogs will still have plenty enough protein. A pet nutritionist that I have access to recommends that type of diet for all dogs.  Just be aware of the plants that are toxic to dogs.
