Aloha Droolers,

Love following the Names discussion. Bassets are such personable creatures! I’m a relative novice to the role of “slave” having only lived with 2 bassets. But here’s how we came to name our first Basset “Odell”. My husband and I took years to mourn the lost of our first “poi dog” (Hawaii’s term for mutt) Biko. (Names after South African martyr Stephen Biko) It took several trips to the local shelter to find a dog that was “good with cats and rabbits”. Yes, he was a 5 month old stray basset puppy. While all the other dogs in the shelter was up on 2 legs barking and panting, Odell stayed at the very back of the dog run with the most pathetic look on his face. He looked just like “Odell C Gardner” the henpecked American husband in Agatha Christie’s “Evil Under the Sun”. When a friend of a friend asked us to adopt another stray who found his way to the AZBHR, we named him Hastings, after Captain Hastings, Hercules Poirot’s faithful side kick. Yes, we are Agatha Christie fans.

When we lost both boys, just 10 days within each other and from 2 totally unrelated diseases we were again devastated. After several failed attempts to adopt another rescue we succumbed to sending our pilot friend to Australia to bring a 3 month female to Hawaii. We named her Hobs. Hobs is names after our 3 beloved dogs, Hastings Odell Biko Slagel.

That’s our story on names.

A Hui hou.
