[Dailydrool] Renal diet

I'm so glad I have a place to go where I can ask questions like this. I
need the bebefit of the Drool's collective wisdom.

As you may know, Dexter showed something funny on his CT scan, and they
think he has bladder cancer or a benign tumor. So we have been giving him
pain medication and are starting him on piroxicam.

But, as if he heard and understood all the vets were saying about him. He
has suddenly decided that the Hill's g/d diet the vet had put him on to
help with his kidney issue is not at all tasty. He has refused it
consistently. Instead, for a few days, he preferred Dashing Basset hound
treats, made lovingly and specially for him by mama. And he ate about the
same amount at each meal as he would have eaten with a regular diet. One of
the vets had said that feeding him treats was OK, but since days went on
with only the treats for food, I talked to my usual vet today, when I took
Charlotte in for a booster shot.

Of course, ideally, Dex should be on a renal diet. But it will not be the
g/d food, according to Himself. Tonight, to get him to eat a more balanced
diet, I gave him some of Horton's regular food (the vet said, as long as it
was not a high-protein diet, it would be OK). I only gave Dex a handful,
but he scarfed it up. So I do not think the inappetance relates to disease.
He's hungry, just not favoring the g/d food. (Sorry, I am not trying to
swear, but that's what the company calls it.) And as good as the Dashing
Basset treats may be, they are never meant to be a balanced diet.

Has anyone had a similar experience, and if you have, can you recommend a
tasty renal diet that we might try? I can get a few samples of t he canned
g/d food and see if they are any tastier than the kibble, but I somehow
don't think that will fit the bill for Dex's tastebuds.

Oh, Dex also is not a fan of the large size of the g/d kibble. Does anyone
know if any of the renal diets are not at least two or three times of the
average kibble? I have been soaking the g/d stuff just to get him to eat it
all along.

Thanks for any advice.
Pam, food slave to the Dashing Bassets
