[Dailydrool] Mom-person Biting Mom-person

Merta Lou’s story and Doc’s reaction reminded me of Vernon Q Basset’s
Terrible Experience.

Vern came from a shelter. He hadn’t been there long, but he had found it
quite dreadful. He was about 8, quite heavy (he became much trimmer with
regular walks, which first puzzled, then fascinated and delighted him.) and
I think he had likely barked every minute he was inside.

He came home after his surgery. (Nevermind removal). My husband picked him
up, since I was away on a business trip. I got home that night.

All was well. Vernon was sleeping on the couch, and like an idiot I bent
over him for a cuddle. I startled him awake, he snarled and his head
clonked mine, and there was suddenly lots of blood. I took full
responsibility for the whole thing. What an exhausting and confusing day he
had had! But I was pretty concerned since a bite on the face isn’t great...
and we had cats and elderly mother with us and and...

So with all this swirling in my mind I rushed off to the bathroom with
husband in pursuit. And realized that the bite was internal. We clonked
heads hard enough that I gave the inside of my upper lip a really good
chomp.

Vern was just horrified. I think he thought he was done, poor guy. He had
been dropped off at the shelter by someone who had only kept him a week, so
it was easy to understand why he was a bit jumpy.

He adjusted, and as some of you will remember lived a long and adventurous
life with us... picking blackberries with his teeth, climbing up on desks
and tables and needing rescue, and working more or less full time as a
member of my mother-in-law’s care team. (He served as the lap blanket.) He
lived to be about 15 and his legend lives on.

Mary, with Paddi B and Simba, both of whom remember Vern fondly though they
found him to be a bed hog
