I googled what colors dogs can see because I remember that there are some
they DO see but never can remember which ones they are. The very first
entry is:

*Neitz confirmed that dogs actually do see color, but many fewer colors
than normal humans do. Instead of seeing the rainbow as violet, blue,
blue-green, green, yellow, orange and red, dogs would see it as dark blue,
light blue, gray, light yellow, darker yellow (sort of brown), and very
dark gray*.

So it well may be that your dogs are picking out as much by color as
texture (which I suspect plays a huge role in toy preference-- a fuzzy toy,
imitating a real prey which their hardwiring would recognize, is preferable
to something smooth. Hard rubber toys are usually infused with a smell to
make them more attractive altho the bouncy play on the teeth may trigger
some prey drive.)

Probably you could get a multi-million dollar grant to Determine the Toy
Prefence in the Domestic Canine by Color(or Texture) or Both. You could sit
and watch your dogs play with different toys for months, jot down some notes
and pretty much stay home. LOL.

I keep threatening to apply for a grant to study the Pre-Adult Play
Prefences of Kittens under the age of Four Motnhs.
